Seminole County has received $20 million in federal government funds for residents and businesses impacted by the coronavirus economic slowdown, officials said on Wednesday.

The county earmarked $10 million in grants for eligible small businesses, $7 million for individuals and $3 million for nonprofit organizations. The money is about 25% of the $82 million from the CARES Act relief package designated for the county by the state. The state is releasing the remaining money in phases and all of the money must be distributed by Dec. 30.

Officials said at a news conference that the county's population falls just under 500,000 residents, so they received the federal money later than Orange and other larger counties in the state.

Chairman Jay Zembower said the county will benefit from the timing because officials had a chance to seek advice from other governments throughout the state. Orange County's botched launch of its grant program last month frustrated thousands of people when the online system shut down minutes after opening.

'We're going to learn lessons from their experience that will allow us to better seamlessly roll this program out,' Zembower said.

The county is aiming to launch the Seminole CARES website with the criteria and documents needed within the next two weeks and the application portal will likely open in mid-August.

Griffin said it will take a 'massive scheduling effort' to coordinate the various learning options for students. The board's approval came after Seminole teachers staged a car rally Tuesday to protest reopening over concern it would jeopardize their health and their families.

'At the end of the day, the larger number of families that sign up for one of the remote or virtual options, the fewer students that will be on our campuses and the easier it will be for us to socially distance and to have fewer teachers having to interact with such large groups of students,' he said.

Griffin noted the 'big personal decision' families face before the semester begins and said the district will try to work with anyone who changes their minds if there's space available.

Seminole's coronavirus numbers continue to tick upward with 121 new cases Tuesday for a total of 3,285 active cases. There are 221 people currently hospitalized in one of four hospitals in the county but officials said that number is expected to go down as patients are set to be discharged soon.

The county announced the deaths of two women — ages 85 and 79 — who were long term care patients and a 78-year-old man, bringing the total count to 28 people who died from the virus.
